Description
About the Test

The DNA Sibling Test is a powerful tool for those seeking to uncover the truth about their familial relationships, especially when the alleged parents are not available for testing. This test is designed for both brothers and sisters, providing the likelihood that potential siblings are full siblings, half siblings, or not siblings at all. In cases where the parent(s) in question are available for testing, the paternity or maternity test is recommended over the DNA sibling test. However, when the alleged parents are missing or deceased, the sibling test becomes an invaluable resource for investigating potential sibling relationships. The test is conducted in our internationally-recognized, AABB, ISO17025, and CLIA accredited lab, ensuring the highest standards of quality and accuracy. Each test comes with a comprehensive genetic report, detailing the DNA profiles of each alleged sibling.

Benefits
Technical Info

The process of a sibling DNA test starts with the collection of buccal (mouth) swabs from each of the potential siblings. These swabs gather cells that hold unique genetic information in the form of DNA, similar to a fingerprint. In our lab, we carefully extract the DNA from the cells and amplify specific DNA regions using a technique called PCR (polymerase chain reaction) for a comprehensive examination. We then compare the DNA patterns of the siblings. A statistical analysis is performed based on the match type typically seen in biologically related siblings, generating a “full sibling index” and “half sibling index.” The higher the index value over 1.0, the greater the likelihood of a biological sibling relationship. Conversely, a lower index value below 1.0 suggests a lower probability of a biological sibling relationship.

FAQs

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about this test.

This test is ideal for individuals who want to investigate a sibling relationship, especially in cases where the alleged parents are not available for testing. It’s suitable for both full and half siblings, as well as brothers and sisters.

If the siblings live in different cities, you can split the kit and send the components to each party for sample collection. Each component has a barcode to ensure the samples are tested together when they arrive at the laboratory. Even if the samples are collected separately, they will still be tested together once they arrive at the laboratory.

Results are typically available within 1-2 business days after the samples are received at our lab. This quick turnaround time ensures you get the answers you need as soon as possible.

Yes, the test provides separate “full sibling index” and “half sibling index” values, which indicate the likelihood of full sibling and half sibling relationships, respectively. These indices help differentiate between full siblings (sharing both parents), half siblings (sharing one parent), and unrelated individuals.
